 JROTC Newsletter August 2011

GULFPORT -- The BCHS US Army JROTC program is off and running this year. Our curriculum covers a wide diversity of educational curriculum with six extra curriculum teams embedded in the course. For many who do not know, by being in JROTC and participating on one of the extracurricular teams for two years and maintaining an academic standard in JROTC above a GPA of 2.0 then you qualify for the HOPE credit, Fine Art credit, as well as the elective credit by being in JROTC.

Our extracurricular teams are as follows: Raiders/Fitness, Drill, Color guard, Exhibition, Marksmanship, and Orienteering. All occur after school with the exception of orienteering. Orienteering is an event hosted by the Florida Orienteering Association, and we attend those on a Saturday in various Florida woodland preserves. If you like the outdoors and testing your map and compass abilities you will definitely enjoy this activity.

In this class, besides becoming a well rounded person and citizen, you will learn life skills that will benefit you in school, at work, and for your future. Also, over the course of aug_news1the year we participate in community service as well as in a community service project, and guess what normally to qualify for Florida scholarship’s there is always caveat requiring a young adult to acquire a certain amount of volunteer hours. So, by being in JROTC, you are preparing yourself mentally, socially, physically, to become a better young citizen for your future! Visit our website at www.highschoolrotc.com, or visit the instructors in building 8 on campus and let us help you get on the path to success for your future. Attached is a video snip that depicts some of our involvement in teams or activities as well as our extra curricular teams either competing or training.

There will be more information about what JROTC is up to as the school year unfolds.
